See what later research says about a paper
Scite helps researchers discover literature and examine how studies have been cited. Its Smart Citations add the text around a reference and classify the statement as supporting, contrasting or mentioning. An article report brings these passages together, with filters for classification, year, paper section and source type.
The research Assistant generates answers with linked scholarly sources. Table Mode gives an article-by-article view with custom columns for more detailed questions. Search can work with citation statements as well as publication information, making it useful when a relevant finding or method appears in the body of a paper rather than its title or abstract.
Collections organise research from search results or existing reference libraries and track new citations and retraction notices. Reference Check examines the citations in an uploaded manuscript PDF. Scite also connects to compatible AI clients through MCP and offers developer APIs, whose scopes and licensing are distinct from an ordinary web subscription.
Best for
- Researchers checking how studies have been cited
- Authors and reviewers examining manuscript references
- Labs organising papers and monitoring new citations
Limitations
Citation labels describe how a particular passage uses a source. Coverage gaps and classification errors can occur, and a lack of contrasting citations is not proof that a study is reliable.
Scite features
Smart Citation context
Read the passage behind a citation and see whether it supports, contrasts or simply mentions the referenced findings.
Article citation reports
Explore a paper’s citing statements by year, source type, section or classification.
Research Assistant and tables
Get cited research answers, or use Table Mode for individual papers and custom follow-up columns.
Citation-statement search
Find claims and methods within citation passages, alongside conventional publication search.
Collections and reference checks
Organise papers, monitor new citations and notices, or examine the references in a manuscript PDF.
MCP and developer access
Connect a compatible AI client using plan credits. REST API evaluation, commercial Search use and additional datasets have separate access terms.

Is Scite free?
The full research platform offers a 7-day trial that converts to the selected subscription unless cancelled. Some public paper metadata and citation-tally API endpoints are accessible without an account.
What are Smart Citations?
They are citation statements classified by how they use the referenced publication: supporting, contrasting or mentioning. A statement count differs from the number of distinct papers citing a study.
Does a supporting citation prove a paper is correct?
No. The label describes a citation passage. It is one piece of evidence, and Scite’s coverage does not include every possible citing source.
Does Basic include the Scite API?
Basic includes MCP credits but no self-service REST API key. Pro adds evaluation key access; broader Search use and some datasets require separate licensing.
