Scientific answers with a trail back to the papers
Consensus is an academic search engine for questions that need published research behind them. It combines paper discovery with cited AI answers, helping readers move from a broad question to the studies that address it. Searches can be narrowed by details such as publication date, study type and open-access availability.
Pro messages provide shorter synthesis, while Deep reviews cover a larger set of papers and produce more structured analysis. Depending on the evidence and question, results can include comparison tables, a timeline, research gaps or the Consensus Meter for yes-or-no questions. Citation passages make the reasoning easier to inspect; their full-text checkmarks distinguish detailed paper analysis from abstract-based answers.
My Library keeps papers, uploaded documents and Collections together for later questions. Reference exports support academic writing in tools such as Zotero and EndNote. Consensus also offers API and MCP access for research integrations, with a monthly allowance and optional extra charges that are separate from the number of Deep reviews in a subscription.
Best for
- Researchers exploring scientific questions
- Students gathering cited papers for academic writing
- Readers comparing findings across a body of literature
Limitations
Full-text access varies by paper. An AI summary or evidence meter covers the retrieved sources and still needs the reader’s judgment about study quality and relevance.
Consensus features
Academic paper discovery
Find studies relevant to a research question and narrow results with research filters.
Cited Pro answers
Summarise findings across up to 20 papers, with links and quoted passages behind the answer.
Deep literature reviews
Explore a topic across up to 100 analysed papers. Structured outputs can include evidence tables, timelines and research gaps.
Full-text paper chat
Ask questions about saved papers, Collections or your own uploaded research material in Pro or Deep mode.
Reference exports
Move papers to a reference manager with CSV or RIS, or export cited answers and reports for academic writing.
API and MCP
Bring academic search into a developer application or compatible AI client. Included calls and paid overages follow the subscription’s limits.
