Conversational help within Tableau’s analytics tools
Tableau Agent adds conversational analysis to Tableau’s existing visual environment. In a worksheet, it can suggest questions, generate supported charts and create or explain calculated fields. The generated visualization remains editable through the normal interface, so an analyst can refine the result directly.
The product extends across several Tableau surfaces. Prep uses prompts for data-cleaning and transformation tasks; Catalog can generate descriptions for content. Pulse supports questions about governed metrics. These capabilities depend on the product surface, edition, role and site configuration, rather than appearing identically for every user.
The newer dashboard assistant is in beta. It can summarize a dashboard, surface insights and answer follow-up questions, but does not build the dashboard. Consumers require AI Access and Full Data Query permissions on the workbook. Dashboard Insights needs published data sources, while Dashboard Q&A can also work with embedded sources.
Cloud authoring runs through Salesforce’s Einstein Trust Layer. Tableau Server follows a different arrangement: supported versions connect directly to the organization’s own model provider, with that provider’s terms and settings. Server support starts at version 2025.3; Desktop authoring starts at 2025.1 when connected to an enabled site. Tableau Next is a separate analytics environment included in the broader Tableau+ bundle.
Best for
- Teams already developing and sharing Tableau reports
- Analysts exploring connected data and calculated fields
- Organizations provisioning Tableau’s licensed AI features
Limitations
The current Cloud+ and Tableau+ AI editions require a sales quote. Standard Viewer pricing is not the price of Tableau Agent. Worksheet authoring cannot create dashboards or data-model joins; the dashboard assistant is a separate beta with its own permissions and supported versions.

Compare with Tableau AgentTableau Agent FAQs
Is Tableau Agent included with a Standard Viewer license?
No. Current Cloud pricing places Tableau Agent in Cloud+ and the Tableau+ bundle, both quoted by sales. A Viewer role in an eligible edition still needs the relevant feature and workbook permissions.
Can Tableau Agent build a dashboard?
Current worksheet authoring documentation excludes dashboard creation. The separate dashboard assistant is a beta for summaries, insights and questions about an existing dashboard.
Does Tableau Agent work in Desktop and Server?
Authoring is supported in Desktop 2025.1+ when connected to an enabled site and in Server 2025.3+. Server uses the organization’s own model provider; individual feature versions and requirements differ.
Which data files can Tableau Agent analyze?
The authoring documentation lists Hyper extracts, CSV, TXT and XLSX, alongside live database connections. Cubes are unsupported, and a data blend is limited to its primary data source.
