Analysis that can become a shared application
Hex brings code-based and visual analysis into the same project. SQL queries, Python code, charts and input controls can sit alongside explanations in a notebook. Its notebook agent can build or modify cells and help arrange an analysis into an app, with proposed changes available to confirm or undo.
Business users can explore data through conversational Threads or chat with a shared app. The relevant workspace role and project permissions determine which experience they can use. Publishing an app preserves its connection to the underlying analysis, while app-only sharing can keep the full notebook out of a viewer’s hands.
Warehouse connections and semantic models provide context for questions. Larger jobs can use warehouse-side execution or optional compute sizes instead of relying on a single fixed row limit. Professional includes five published apps; Team adds unlimited apps, longer project history and scheduled runs. Team and Enterprise support the documented public API.
Hex’s model providers do not train on its AI-session data. Hex’s own use of those sessions to improve its AI depends on the plan and training settings; an opt-out is available. Advanced models can have different retention arrangements and require administrator approval. These distinctions matter for teams placing business data in an AI workspace.
Best for
- Data teams working with SQL warehouses and Python
- Analysts publishing reusable reports for colleagues
- Organizations managing AI context and data permissions
Limitations
AI access depends on both the workspace role and project permissions. Seat credits, optional credit top-ups and additional compute have separate billing rules. Provider no-training terms do not mean every Hex plan excludes its own AI-session improvement use.

Compare with HexHex FAQs
Can Hex use SQL and Python together?
Yes. A Hex notebook supports SQL, Python and visual cells, and the notebook agent can help create or modify them.
How much does Hex cost?
Public rates are USD 36 per Professional Editor per month and USD 75 per Team Editor per month. Community is free; extra credits and advanced compute can add charges.
Do Hex AI credits roll over?
Monthly per-seat grants do not roll over and cannot be transferred. Optional workspace top-ups are pooled and roll over; annual committed add-ons expire at the end of the contract.
Can colleagues use an app without seeing the notebook?
Hex supports app-only access, subject to sharing permissions. Publishing a project as an app does not automatically grant access to other people.
