What is FLUX?
FLUX is a family of visual AI models from Black Forest Labs. Its current FLUX 3 Image model generates pictures from text, edits supplied images and combines references into a new composition. Hosted access is available through the developer API and browser playground. FLUX.2 remains supported as a separate model family with its own capabilities and deployment options.
The Image model’s layout controls give elements positions as well as descriptions. Bounding boxes can specify where a subject belongs, while image references supply source material. For editing, written instructions and reference images describe changes to the existing scene. These controls guide the generation; a bounding box does not act as a hard clipping mask.
Developers can integrate hosted FLUX models into their applications, or run eligible model weights on their own infrastructure under the relevant licence. Those routes differ in cost, terms and infrastructure requirements. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is available under Apache 2.0, while the 9B weights have non-commercial terms unless covered by an appropriate commercial licence.
Best for
- Developers adding image generation and edits to an application.
- Creative teams using multiple references and controlled layouts.
- Technical teams evaluating eligible self-hosted image models.
Limitations
API output has a time-limited retrieval URL and must be saved promptly. Costs change with the selected model and output tier. Hosted API terms permit use of inputs and outputs for model improvement; self-hosting licences and commercial rights vary by model.
FLUX features
Text-to-image generation
Send a prompt to FLUX 3 Image and choose an output tier and aspect ratio. The same endpoint supports generation and editing.
Multi-reference composition
Combine up to ten images and describe how their subjects relate. References can supply products, characters or scene elements.
Instruction-based edits
Provide an image and a written change, then continue with further revisions. Multi-reference requests can replace or introduce an object from another image.
Bounding-box layouts
Specify the placement and scale of elements through boxes in the prompt. Editing instructions can keep, move, replace or remove named elements; boxes remain guidance rather than clipping masks.
Resolution tiers
FLUX 3 Image supports tiers from 768sq through 4K. The tier reflects an approximate pixel count, so a wide image has different width and height from a square image in the same tier.
Licensed local deployments
Eligible FLUX.2 weights can run on your infrastructure. Commercial packages vary by model, user count, domain and intended use; API access does not grant general self-hosting rights.

Is FLUX a subscription app?
Black Forest Labs’ hosted API uses generation-based billing rather than a per-seat subscription. Its browser playground offers a way to access the models, while eligible local deployments follow separate model licences.
Is every FLUX model free for commercial use?
No. Licences differ across the family. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B uses Apache 2.0; the 9B weights use a non-commercial licence unless separately licensed. Hosted API and commercial self-hosting have their own terms.
Does 4K always mean a 4096-pixel-wide FLUX image?
FLUX 3’s 4K tier represents approximately 16 megapixels. Aspect ratio changes the delivered width and height, and dimensions are rounded to multiples of 16 rather than fixed at 4096 pixels wide.
