AI analytics connected to the lakehouse
Databricks AI/BI combines dashboards and conversational data exploration inside the Databricks platform. Genie Agents, formerly Genie Spaces, answer questions using configured tables, views and business context. Their SQL-backed results can include explanations and charts, with query controls available for closer inspection.
Unity Catalog supplies permissions and metadata. Agents can use table comments, instructions, example SQL and business definitions to understand the data. Read-only queries run on a configured SQL warehouse; the end user’s data identity governs access to protected rows and columns, while compute authentication follows the configured agent setup.
Chat mode focuses on structured data. Agent mode can perform multi-step analysis and produce a report with citations; support for unstructured files in Unity Catalog volumes is beta. These capabilities differ from Genie One and Genie Code, so an organization needs to provision the appropriate experience rather than assume every Genie surface behaves identically.
Users can refine charts, export results as CSV, download chart images and save visuals to dashboards. Developer APIs support conversational integration, with separate setup and warehouse permissions. Processing geography also matters: some locations require cross-geography processing, while availability and AI configuration vary by region.

Limitations
Genie output depends on the configured data context and permissions. Unstructured Agent-mode analysis and some inspection features are previews. SQL warehouse compute is billed separately, and temporary human-user AI offers do not apply to service principals.

Are Genie Agents the same as Genie Spaces?
Current documentation renames Genie Spaces to Genie Agents. The configured data context remains central to their conversational analytics.
Is Databricks Genie free?
A temporary offer covers human-user Genie One and Genie Agent LLM usage through January 31, 2027. SQL compute is separate, service principals are excluded, and other Genie services have their own billing.
Can Genie export an answer?
Results can be downloaded as CSV, charts as PNG, and visualizations saved to dashboards. The documented CSV download limit is approximately 1 GB; result sets are retained for seven days.
Can Genie read unstructured documents?
Chat mode is structured-data analysis. Agent mode supports unstructured files in Unity Catalog volumes as a beta; Genie One has a different set of external content integrations.
