Generate new scenes and edit the footage you already have
Runway brings several parts of AI video production together. Gen-4.5 creates short clips from a description or a starting image, while the broader model library includes image, video and audio tools. Agent adds a conversational route to creating ads, product videos and social assets: it can select a model, generate material and revise the result from further instructions. The timeline inside Agent lets creators arrange clips, trim sequences and layer audio, giving individual generations a place in a longer finished video.
For existing footage, Edit Studio uses Aleph 2.0 to change elements within a scene. An edited reference frame previews the intended change before the video is generated. The service supports sequences up to 30 seconds at 1080p, including footage containing multiple cuts. Background swaps, lighting changes and product variations are separate tasks from creating an entirely new shot. Runway also offers a panel for Premiere Pro and After Effects on macOS and Windows; generation through that panel requires a paid Runway plan and draws from its existing credits. Official iPhone and Android apps provide mobile creation and synced work; available tools vary by surface.
The model determines the technical limits. Gen-4.5 currently creates two- to ten-second clips at 720p, with landscape text-to-video and additional image-to-video aspect ratios. Paid plans include upscaling, which increases output dimensions rather than making the original generation native 4K. Max and certain legacy or enterprise plans offer ProRes and PNG sequence generation at an extra credit cost. Runway suits creators who want both generative footage and tools to develop it further, with consumption tied to the chosen model, duration and format.
Best for
- Creators generating concept footage and short video scenes
- Marketing teams producing ads and campaign variations
- Editors adapting existing footage with AI
Limitations
Gen-4.5’s native output is 720p and its single-generation limit is ten seconds; other models and editing tools have separate limits. Free offers selected models and 125 one-time credits. Standard and Pro monthly credits do not roll over. ProRes and PNG sequence generation need an eligible higher plan and cost extra. The developer API has separate pricing.
