Proofreading across languages and writing apps
LanguageTool checks spelling, grammar, punctuation and style in a broad range of languages. Its public web checker lets you paste a passage without creating an account, while browser add-ons and office integrations bring suggestions into the places where you write. The focus is on improving existing text: identifying a misspelling, correcting agreement, adjusting punctuation or replacing awkward phrasing.
Coverage differs by language. The product supports more than 30 languages and dialects, but its enhanced checks are concentrated in English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese. Some listed languages do not have spellchecking. AI paraphrasing adds sentence alternatives, including formal, fluent, simple and concise wording. Personal dictionaries help with names and specialist vocabulary, while team style guides and shared terminology support consistent writing across an organisation.
The free public checker has a smaller text-field ceiling and a limited daily paraphrasing allowance. Premium raises the advertised per-text limit to 150,000 characters and offers unlimited sentence paraphrasing. The Editor can store documents for signed-in users. LanguageTool’s current privacy policy says Individual and Team inputs are excluded from language-model training by default; that promise should not be confused with a claim that every hosted feature runs locally or never stores a document. A separate proofreading API serves developers, with its own request limits and commercial terms.

Limitations
Language coverage and checking depth vary. Mixed-language text may be checked according to its dominant language, so separate passages can be needed. Hosted apps and AI paraphrasing should not be assumed to have the same capabilities as the self-hosted open-source checker.

Can I use LanguageTool without signing up?
Yes. The public grammar checker is available without an account. Saved Editor documents and paid account features require sign-in.
How much is LanguageTool Premium?
The reviewed regular EUR prices, including VAT, are EUR 19.90 monthly or EUR 59.90 for a full year. A temporary promotion was visible; checkout and renewal terms can differ.
Does LanguageTool train models on my text?
Its current privacy policy states that Individual and Team user inputs are excluded from language-model training by default. The Editor still stores saved documents; this is not a universal zero-retention promise.
Is the proofreading API included in Premium?
The API has separate access terms and request limits. Web Premium’s text-field allowance should not be treated as an API subscription.
