Conversation practice within a language course
Duolingo Max puts conversational AI beside Duolingo’s lesson path. Lily provides a free-flowing speaking partner that responds to what you say. You can ask her to slow down or repeat a phrase, and the app offers a transcript after the call. This is simulated conversation with an AI character, rather than a live human lesson.
Falstaff provides a more guided experience, with level-based questions, suggested phrases, translations and feedback in your own language. The announcement describes an iOS rollout across English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Japanese, German, Italian, Korean and Chinese. Course, platform and level availability determine which conversation features appear.
Roleplay adds everyday scenarios such as ordering food or discussing plans, with feedback on the conversation. Duolingo’s public Max overview also describes Super benefits such as ad-free study and personalized review. These language-course activities use the app’s curriculum and your responses; they are different from uploading an arbitrary textbook for an AI tutor.
Video Call is expanding beyond Max. In its August 2026 update, Duolingo said most new Super subscribers already had access and that it planned to extend access to existing Super subscribers later in the year. Video Call availability now depends on the account and rollout as well as the subscription tier.
