What is Claude?
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant for writing, research, document analysis and coding. It combines a conversation with tools that can read source material and produce useful files. Web, desktop and mobile access let you return to the same work across devices, while connected services can supply context with permission.
The file-creation environment can run calculations and produce spreadsheets, presentations, Word documents and PDFs. That makes Claude useful when an answer needs to become a deliverable: a financial worksheet, an edited report or a slide deck. Artifacts provide a separate space for creations, and paid document, slide and design templates add structured editing options.
Web search supplies current information with source links. Paid Research explores a question through multiple searches and can incorporate connected content. Pro and Max also include Claude Code access. Anthropic is bringing the longer-running tasks previously branded Cowork into Claude, with rollout beginning on Pro and Max; availability varies by plan and organisation settings.

Limitations
Claude can produce incorrect answers and calculations. Large attachments, code execution and research consume usage faster than short conversations. Upload limits differ between chat, Projects and file creation; business features may require administrator access.

Writing and document analysis
Work with reports, text files and spreadsheets, or add images for visual context. PDF processing differs by length: longer PDFs can be text-only, and embedded images in other document formats are not automatically read.
Web search with citations
Find current information and follow source links from the answer. Direct web-page retrieval also counts toward usage; Team and Enterprise workspaces can control whether search is available.
Multi-source Research
Paid Research investigates a topic through connected searches, combining public web information with authorised sources such as Google content. It shares the conversation allowance and can consume it more quickly.
Spreadsheets and downloadable files
Use code execution to analyse data and create XLSX spreadsheets, PPTX presentations, DOCX documents or PDFs. The computing environment performs the calculations and generates the files.
Editable Artifacts
Keep creations in a dedicated editing space. Paid Design, Slides and Docs templates support richer layouts and exports; creation and direct editing of these templates are available on web and desktop.
Connected tools and longer tasks
Bring supported services into a conversation and give Claude access to selected tools. Longer-running background work is joining the main Claude experience, with features and permissions depending on rollout and plan.
